Paynesville is a city in Stearns County, Minnesota, located on Lake Koronis in the central part of the state. With a population of 2,388 according to the 2020 census, it serves as part of the St. Cloud Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The city was platted in 1857 by Edwin E. Payne, from whom it takes its name. During the 1862 Dakota War, Paynesville was completely evacuated and its townsite burned to the ground. The community was subsequently rebuilt, this time with a wooden stockade constructed by the U.S. Army. The arrival of the Soo Line and Great Northern Railway in 1886 marked a turning point for the city, spurring increased settlement and leading to the formation of Jim Town and North Paynesville along the respective railroad lines. Jim Town, situated where downtown Paynesville stands today, eventually became the largest of these settlements and merged with the others to form New Paynesville, a name later shortened back to simply Paynesville. A post office has continuously operated in Paynesville since its founding year of 1857.
Paynesville lies along the North Fork of the Crow River and encompasses 2.32 square miles. The city has experienced modest population changes over recent decades, with the 2010 census recording 2,432 residents.
