As part of the St. Cloud metropolitan area, the city is home to 4,164 residents according to the 2020 census.
The community has deep historical roots. Originally inhabited by the Ojibwe, Winnebago, and Dakota peoples, Cold Spring was platted in 1856 and named for the many springs near its original town site. A post office opened in 1857. German-speaking Catholics settled the area in the nineteenth century, recruited through advertisements placed by Slovenian missionary priest Francis Xavier Pierz in major German-language newspapers across the United States and Europe. Pierz promoted the Sauk River Valley as a "land flowing with milk and honey" and a safe haven from disease and anti-Catholic persecution. During the grasshopper plagues of the 1870s, residents built Assumption Chapel, also known as the Grasshopper Chapel, in petition for relief from the locusts. Three structures now stand on the National Register of Historic Places: the John Oster House and Ferdinand Peters House, both constructed in 1907, and the Eugene Hermanutz House, built in 1912.
The city covers 2.70 square miles, with the Sauk River bisecting it from the southwest. While geographically situated within Wakefield Township, Cold Spring operates as a separate entity.
