Mulberry is a city of 3,952 residents located in Polk County, Florida, as part of the Lakeland–Winter Haven Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city covers 3.2 square miles within the Central Florida Highlands, featuring flatland interspersed with gently rolling hills in a humid subtropical climate. Mulberry is home to the 334-acre Alafia River Reserve.
The city's origins trace to the 1840s when the first white settlers arrived. Early industry centered on logging longleaf yellow pine that covered the landscape. The town took its name from a mulberry tree where the railroad stopped to let off passengers and drop mail. This tree became the town's informal gathering place and eventually lent its name to Mulberry itself. In 1886, phosphate rock discovery in the Peace River transformed the economy, replacing logging with mining operations. This shift brought stability and led to Mulberry's incorporation in 1901. The Masonic lodge, established in 1910, remains operational today.
The phosphate industry shaped Mulberry's social history. By 1919, miners had organized with the International Union of Mine, Mill, and Smelter Workers, striking for minimum wage and an eight-hour workday. The resulting conflict escalated on August 21, 1919, when mine guards fired on the town, killing a two-year-old child and wounding two adults. The guards were arrested. The Ku Klux Klan maintained a presence in Mulberry through the twentieth century, with the last public march occurring in 1979. At least six Black residents and one white man were lynched in the early 1900s.
