Moran is an unincorporated community located in Brevort Township in Mackinac County, Michigan, situated along Highway M-123 approximately thirteen miles northwest of St. Ignace. The community's history reflects the region's settlement patterns and the personalities who shaped its development. Originally called Jacob City, the settlement was established in 1881 when the German Land Company of Detroit sold land to members of their organization. However, in 1883, Jacob, the company's president, was accused of fraud and removed from leadership. William B. Moran, another member of the group, stepped forward to loan funds that allowed the organization to purchase additional land. In recognition of his financial support, the settlement was renamed Moran in 1883. The post office, initially established as Jacob City in February 1882, was renamed Moran just one month later in January 1883. The community's postal history proved complex, as the office was transferred and renamed Allenville in April 1898 before a Moran post office was re-established in May 1910. It is worth noting that while Moran received its name from William B. Moran, other nearby geographic features in the region bearing the Moran name, including Moran Township, East Moran Bay, West Moran Bay, and the Moran River, derive from a different source, tracing back to the French name Morin.
