Montezuma is an unincorporated community in San Miguel County, New Mexico, located five miles northwest of Las Vegas at the mouth of Gallinas Canyon. According to the 2020 census, the community had a population of 503, with 363 residents under the age of twenty. The area has long been known for its natural hot springs, originally called "Los Ojos Calientes" and "Las Vegas Hot Springs" until the late nineteenth century. These springs were valued therapeutically and held sacred significance for Native peoples, who tradition says gathered there peacefully across tribal lines to hold ceremonies and enjoy the healing waters. Before mechanical refrigeration became available, Montezuma was also known for its ice ponds, which supplied ice to customers across the country. The community developed as a resort destination and became home to the Montezuma Hotel, a palatial health resort and one of the few Harvey House hotels still standing in New Mexico, though it is no longer operated as a hotel.
