McCune is a small city in Crawford County, Kansas that began as a railroad town in the late nineteenth century. The first post office was established in August 1878, and the city was laid out the following year by its founder, Isaac McCune. The community was officially incorporated as a city in 1881. McCune's development was closely tied to the St. Louis–San Francisco Railway's Parsons subdivision, which ran through the area. A grain elevator built in McCune became the largest on the entire rail line and still stands today as a reminder of the city's agricultural heritage.
McCune occupies just 0.31 square miles and has experienced gradual population decline over the decades, with 426 residents in 2000, 405 in 2010, and 370 according to the 2020 census. The community experiences a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. Today, McCune students are part of USD 247 school district and attend Southeast High School, known as the Lancers. The original McCune High School, which had the Eagles as its mascot, closed through school unification.
