Malin is a small city in southern Klamath County, Oregon, situated at an elevation of 4,062 feet near the Oregon-California border. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 731 residents, all living in a rural setting within just half a square mile of land.
The community's origins trace back to September 30, 1909, when 65 Bohemian families settled on land that had formerly been at the bottom of Tule Lake. These settlers named their new town after Malín, a Czech town now part of Kutná Hora, reflecting their heritage. The discovery of a large horseradish plant became significant to the town's identity, and Malin remains famous for this crop. Many descendants of those original Czech families continue to live in Malin and maintain family farms there. Fossils were also discovered near the town in 1925.
Located southeast of Klamath Falls and east of Merrill, Malin sits along a spur of Oregon Route 39, approximately 30 miles from Klamath Falls and 309 miles from Portland. The nearby Lava Beds National Monument lies just to the south in California.
