Cascade Summit is an unincorporated community in Klamath County, Oregon, situated on the west shore of Odell Lake near Shelter Cove, approximately thirty miles southeast of Oakridge. The community owes its existence to the Southern Pacific Railroad's Cascade Line, which was completed in 1925 and 1926. The station was strategically named for its location just east of the summit tunnel through the Cascades, and it represents the highest point on the railroad's crossing of the mountain range at an elevation of 4,852 feet. A post office operated in Cascade Summit from 1927 until its closure in 1980. During the railroad's Southern Pacific era, the station, siding, and wye made Cascade Summit a notable location, famous enough to serve as a backdrop for publicity photographs. From the 1930s through the 1940s, passenger trains stopped at the station on a daily basis, though today only the siding remains as evidence of that bustling period. The community was also home to Cascade Summit Lodge, which eventually burned down, though its foundation remained visible as recently as 1990. The railroad line is now owned by Union Pacific. Cascade Summit experiences a warm-summer Mediterranean climate, with warm and dry summers featuring no average monthly temperatures exceeding 71.6 degrees Fahrenheit.
