Chiloquin is a small city in Klamath County, Oregon, situated at an elevation of 4,180 feet in the high desert region of the state. The name derives from a Klamath word meaning "flint place," and the city itself takes its name from a pioneer version of Chaloquin, a Klamath chief who lived during the time of the 1864 treaty. In 1914, a woman named Bessie Chiloquin deeded a right-of-way through the area to the Southern Pacific Railroad, helping to establish the town's connection to regional transportation networks.
Located about 26 miles north of Klamath Falls and 253 miles south of Portland, Chiloquin sits slightly east of U.S. Route 97 near its intersection with Oregon Route 62. The Williamson River flows through the city in a north-south direction, receiving the Sprague River from the east. Nearby natural features include Agency Lake to the west and the Winema National Forest, which approaches the city from both directions.
The area experiences warm, dry summers with a warm-summer Mediterranean climate. Residents contend with an unusual seasonal phenomenon: massive swarms of Klamath midges during spring and summer months. These nonbiting insects, which can number in the thousands, occasionally clog car radiators and obscure windshields, though they pose no health risk.
As of the 2020 census, Chiloquin had a population of 767 residents. The community remains entirely rural, with a median age of 39.3 years.
