Laurel is a city located between Washington, D.C., and Baltimore on the banks of the Patuxent River in Prince George's County, Maryland. With a population of 30,060 at the 2020 census, it is part of the Washington Metropolitan Area. The city's origins trace to the early 19th century as a mill town, when Nicholas Snowden built a grist mill around 1811 that eventually grew into a cotton operation. The arrival of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in 1835 proved transformative, spurring the creation of the Patuxent Manufacturing Company and the expansion of mills including the Avondale Mill. Housing for nearly 300 workers was constructed, and the community became a true company town complete with schools and shops.
Originally called Laurel Factory for its abundant laurel trees, the town received its first postmaster, Edward Snowden, in 1837. During the 1840s, three historic churches were established that remain active congregations today: the Methodist, St. Mary of the Mills, and St. Philip's Episcopal. Following the Civil War, Laurel evolved into an early suburban community as residents increasingly commuted by rail to jobs in Washington and Baltimore. The town was incorporated in 1870 and reincorporated in 1890, coinciding with the installation of electric power, paved streets, and boarded sidewalks. By then, the population had grown to 2,080. Today, Laurel maintains a historic district centered on its Main Street, preserving its heritage as a pioneering industrial and commuter community.
