Arnold, a census-designated place in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, sits on the scenic Broadneck Peninsula just outside Annapolis, the state capital. Located 18.78 miles south of Baltimore and 29.97 miles east of Washington, D.C., Arnold had a population of 24,064 as of the 2020 census. The community is bordered by Severna Park to the northwest, Cape Saint Claire to the southeast, Annapolis to the southwest, and Lake Shore to the northeast, with neighborhoods straddling College Parkway and Maryland Route 2.
The area's human history extends back thousands of years. Native Americans lived in the region during pre-Columbian times, with artifacts from the Archaic period found at Ulmstead Point, though Captain John Smith reported no Native presence when he arrived in 1608. Following Anne Arundel County's establishment in 1650, the land that became Arnold was part of Swan Neck, a large proprietary grant given to Edward Lloyd I. By the early nineteenth century, the area included Rayland, an agricultural estate along the Severn River. Arnold itself began as a settlement centered on John Arnold's farm. Arnold was a War of 1812 veteran who acquired 300 acres on the north side of the Severn River. His son Thomas later served as station master for the Baltimore and Annapolis Short Line Railroad. The community has also hosted recreational attractions, including a racetrack in what is now Revell-Downs and a rollercoaster and boardwalk at Mago Vista Beach.
