Cape St. Claire is a covenanted community and census-designated place located in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, just seven miles west of Annapolis. The CDP encompasses approximately 2.5 square miles, bounded by the Magothy and Little Magothy rivers to the north and east, with Deep Creek and College Parkway marking its western and southern borders. While the community of Cape St. Claire itself accounts for about eighty percent of the CDP's homes and residents, the area also includes the smaller communities of Atlantis, Walnut Ridge, Green Holly, and St. Claire Court. According to the 2020 census, the CDP had a population of 9,179 residents.
The area was primarily farmland until the 1940s, with two houses from the late eighteenth century still standing today. In the early twentieth century, Dr. Hugh H. Young, a Johns Hopkins University physician, began acquiring farmland to develop a community. His initial project, Persimmon Point, failed due to the Great Depression. After Dr. Young's death, his children established the River Bay Company to manage the property. On June 14, 1949, the River Bay Company platted Cape St. Claire as a summer retreat for residents of Washington, D.C., and Baltimore. The Cape St. Claire Club, later renamed the Cape St. Claire Improvement Association in 1959, was created to manage community affairs. Today, Cape St. Claire features three marinas, multiple parks and beaches, a shopping center, two schools, several churches, and fire protection provided by the Cape St. Claire Volunteer Fire Company.
