Garner is a town located in Wake County, North Carolina, serving as a suburban community within the Research Triangle region. According to the 2020 census, Garner has a population of 31,159 residents and covers a total area of 14.8 square miles. The town's city limits lie entirely within Wake County, though unincorporated areas of Wake County and portions of Johnston County, including the Cleveland community, carry Garner mailing addresses. The history of Garner stretches back to around 1751, when land near the present-day town was first settled. Development accelerated after the North Carolina Railroad was built in the 1850s, leading to the establishment of a wood-and-water stop in downtown Garner before the 1870s. The community of Garner's Station received its post office in 1878 and was incorporated in 1883, though its charter was repealed in 1891. The charter was reinstated in 1905 when the Town of Garner was officially established, with J.B. Richardson serving as the first mayor. Telephone service arrived in 1912, and US 70, which runs nearby, became North Carolina's first paved highway in 1917. Today, Garner operates under a council-manager government structure and functions as a bedroom community for the Research Triangle region.
