Fuquay-Varina is a town in southern Wake County, North Carolina, located south of Holly Springs and southwest of Garner. With a population of 34,152 at the 2020 census, it has grown into a vibrant community with roots stretching back to the 1800s. The town's hyphenated name reflects its unique history as two separate communities, Fuquay Springs and Varina, which merged in 1963 to create the modern town.
The area's story began when Frenchman William Fuquay first settled in the farming community of Sippihaw. In 1858, his son Stephen discovered a mineral spring while plowing the family tobacco farm. Believing the water possessed healing properties, he helped establish the springs as a tourist attraction. By 1860, the springs had been sold to investors who formed the Chalybeate Springs Company to market them commercially. Meanwhile, a neighboring community called Varina developed around a post office established in 1880 by J.D. "Squire" Ballentine, a former Confederate soldier and town schoolmaster who named the post office after his wife, Virginia Avery.
The springs' popularity peaked in the 1890s and early 1900s when businessman John Mills introduced "Moonlight Excursions," nighttime train trips from Raleigh that brought visitors seeking the waters' benefits. Hotels, restaurants, and entertainment venues flourished. Fuquay Springs incorporated in 1909, while Varina established itself as an agricultural and railroad hub with warehouses, stores, and a bank. Though the springs' tourism declined as automobile travel improved, the tobacco industry remained central to the economy until the towns merged in 1963.
