Apex is a town straddling Wake and Chatham counties in North Carolina, home to the community of Friendship at its southern border. The town's name originates from the highest point on the old Chatham Railroad, which railroad workers called the "apex of the grade." When the Chatham Railroad was completed in 1869, connecting Chatham County with Raleigh, trains would stop at a pond near this highest point to replenish their water, and a community gradually developed around the stop. Apex was officially incorporated in 1873 and by 1900 had a population of 349. In its early decades, the town cleared forests for farmland, particularly tobacco, and served as a trading center near the state capital, with the railroad shipping lumber, tar, and agricultural products.
The town experienced significant growth beginning in the 1950s, driven largely by proximity to Research Triangle Park, established in the 1960s. During the 1990s, Apex's population quadrupled to over 20,000. As of the 2020 census, the population had reached 58,780, making it the 17th-most populous municipality in North Carolina. The historic downtown was designated a historic district in 1994, and the Apex train depot, built in 1867, remains a landmark. The town's well-preserved downtown reflects its character as one of the most intact railroad towns in the state. Today, Apex embraces the motto "The Peak of Good Living."
