Yaphank is a hamlet and census-designated place in the south part of the Town of Brookhaven in Suffolk County, New York. As of the 2020 census, it had a population of 5,974. The community's roots trace back to the early eighteenth century when Captain Robert Robinson built his Dutch Colonial house in 1726 and later constructed a mill across the street in 1739, a date considered the founding of the hamlet. The area was originally called Millville, inspired by two mills built along the Carmans River by John Homan in the mid-eighteenth century. When a post office opened in 1846, the town was renamed Yaphank, derived from the Native American word Yamphanke, meaning "bank of a river," because thirteen other New York towns already bore the name Millville.
The arrival of the Long Island Rail Road in 1843 transformed Yaphank into a major commercial center almost overnight. By 1875, the small mill town supported diverse businesses including grist mills, lumber mills, blacksmith shops, a printing office, and various other shops and services. Today, while many of those industries have disappeared, Yaphank remains home to modern businesses and significant county facilities. The Suffolk County Police Department headquarters, the county fire academy, and the Suffolk County Farm and Education Center are all located here. The area is also home to Brookhaven National Laboratory, which occupies the former site of Camp Upton, a boot camp established in 1917 that trained over thirty thousand men during World War One, including songwriter Irving Berlin.
