Melville is an affluent hamlet and census-designated place in the town of Huntington in Suffolk County, on Long Island. According to the 2020 census, the area is home to 19,284 residents spread across 12.1 square miles.
The region has a rich history stretching back centuries. Native Americans knew the area as Sunsquams, and in the 17th century it became known as Samuel Ketcham's Valley, named after one of the earliest residents. The name Sweet Hollow emerged later, likely because of the large population of honeybees and honey found in the trees. A Presbyterian church was constructed at the corner of Old Country and Sweet Hollow Roads in 1829 and continues to serve the community today, though it was relocated one mile west in 1977.
The name Melville itself first appeared in school records in 1854. While some believe it honors American novelist Herman Melville, author of Moby-Dick, the origin more likely derives from mel, the Latin word for honey, reflecting the area's historical connection to beekeeping.
The early twentieth century brought significant change to Melville. In 1909, a trolley line connecting to Huntington was established, but it closed a decade later after farmers complained that the noise frightened their animals. Office development accelerated along Route 110 during the 1960s, making Melville an important business hub for Suffolk County.
