Middle Island is a hamlet and census-designated place located in the Town of Brookhaven in Suffolk County on Long Island. With a population of 10,546 as of the 2020 census, the community sits strategically between neighboring hamlets, earning its name from its geographical position approximately halfway between Long Island's eastern and western ends as well as between the Long Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean.
The European-American history of Middle Island extends back to 1766, when the first Presbyterian church was built by Rev. David Rose, who served as both doctor and pastor to the frontier congregation on horseback, carrying Bibles and medicines in his saddlebags. A cemetery opened that same year across from the church. Around this period, a French and Indian War veteran named Jonathan Edwards introduced white pine seedlings inspired by those he admired in Quebec, planting them along what is now Middle Island-Miller Place Road. These trees spread throughout the community, and in 1812, a local farmer named William Dayton collected pine cones from the original plantings, eventually contributing to what became Prosser Pines and Cathedral Pines County Parks.
The first schoolhouse was constructed in 1813 east of the church, followed by a new church building in 1837 that served the community for two centuries. For over a hundred years, Pfeiffer's Store functioned as a vital gathering place until it burned down in 1971. A nearby lake, originally called Corwin's Pond, was renamed Artist Lake after painter Alonzo Chappel settled there in 1869. The community experienced significant growth during the 1940s and 1950s when Estonian refugees settled primarily around the Pine Lake area.
