Wye Mills is an unincorporated community in Talbot County, Maryland, situated at an elevation of 20 feet. Located at the intersection of Maryland routes 404 and 662 just south of the Queen Anne's County border, this small community holds significant historical importance both locally and nationally.
The Wye Mill, which has operated nearly continuously since 1682, stands as the area's oldest continuously working enterprise and now houses a museum alongside its mill operations. The community was also home to the Wye Oak, Maryland's honorary state tree, until it was destroyed by a severe thunderstorm on June 6, 2002. St. Luke's, also known as the Old Wye Church, represents the only surviving 18th-century Anglican church in Talbot County, having opened in 1712. Several historic structures, including the Wye House, a plantation mansion dating between 1780 and 1790, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, along with the Miller's House and Wilton.
Wye Mills gained international attention in October 1998 when former President Bill Clinton convened the Wye Mills summit to address the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. King Hussein of Jordan and Palestinian President Yasser Arafat attended the negotiations, which resolved several issues, though major questions including boundaries remained unresolved. The community also briefly sheltered Elián González and his family in 2000 during the custody dispute and Cuban-American relations controversy, housing them at the remote Wye River Plantation while legal proceedings continued.
