Saint Michaels, located in Talbot County on a narrow neck of land along the Miles River, is a town with deep roots in Maryland's maritime heritage. The community traces its name to an Episcopal parish established in 1677 and named after Michael the Archangel. Early settlers drawn by the church engaged in tobacco growing and shipbuilding, laying the foundation for the town's character. James Braddock laid out Saint Michaels as a speculative development in the 1770s, notably designing it around a central square rather than following the typical grid pattern of the era. The town was incorporated in 1804.
Though named for an Anglican church, Saint Michaels became predominantly Methodist after visits from itinerant preachers, with a Methodist church established in the town center. By the War of 1812, as many as six shipbuilders operated in or near Saint Michaels, producing fast schooners known as Baltimore Clippers. The town gained prominence during the war when Admiral George Cockburn's fleet attacked on August 10, 1813, targeting the militia battery and shipyards. Though cannonballs struck buildings, the British bombardment failed to destroy the facilities, and the town became known as "the town that fooled the British," a nickname adopted during the sesquicentennial celebration in 1963.
After shipbuilding declined, an oyster industry revived the community. By the late nineteenth century, most residents engaged in oystering or worked in waterfront shucking houses. The town remains a tourist destination, with hotels, restaurants, and tour boat service connecting it to Annapolis and other nearby communities. The current population stands at 1,094 as of 2023, growing at approximately 1.3 percent annually.
