Easton is the county seat of Talbot County, Maryland, and received its official beginning through an Act of the Assembly of the Province of Maryland dated November 4, 1710. The act authorized the construction of a courthouse at Armstrong's Old Field near Pitt's Bridge, relocating the county court from York, which officials deemed inconvenient for residents across the county. Two acres of land were purchased from Philemon Armstrong for fifteen thousand pounds of tobacco, and the brick courthouse, measuring twenty by thirty feet, was built at a cost of one hundred fifteen thousand pounds of tobacco. A tavern soon followed to serve those attending court, along with stores and dwellings, initially making the settlement known as Talbot Court House. The town's current name likely derives from Easton in Somerset, England. The area had earlier settlement, including a Quaker meeting house constructed between 1682 and 1684, and the Wye plantation, established in the 1650s by Welsh Puritan planter Edward Lloyd and still owned by his descendants. In recent times, Easton has continued to develop. The 2020 census recorded a population of 17,101, with an estimated population of 17,342 in 2022. The town covers 10.67 square miles and experiences a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild to cool winters. In 2018, Easton was recognized by Forbes as one of America's top five coolest places to buy a vacation home.
