Westbrook is a town in Middlesex County, Connecticut, located in the shoreline area of the state within the Lower Connecticut River Valley Planning Region. The town was incorporated in 1840, though it was previously known as Pochoug and then West Saybrook before becoming a separate entity from the Town of Old Saybrook. Today, Westbrook has a population of 6,769 as of the 2020 census.
The town covers 21.4 square miles, with 15.7 square miles of land and 5.7 miles of water. Westbrook is bordered by Essex, Clinton, Deep River, and Old Saybrook, where the Connecticut River meets Long Island Sound. The town encompasses three uninhabited islands in Long Island Sound: Salt Island, the smallest at approximately 0.9 acres; Menunketesuck Island, the largest at 4.6 acres and part of the Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge; and Duck Island, measuring about 3.6 acres. The Salt Meadow Unit of the Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge is also located in town.
