Rockfall is a village located in the northeastern section of Middlefield, a town in Middlesex County, Connecticut. Middlefield itself is part of the Lower Connecticut River Valley Planning Region and had a population of 4,217 at the 2020 census. The town's name reflects its geographic position, situated halfway between Middletown and Durham, and also between Middletown and Meriden.
Though small in size, Middlefield has deep historical roots extending back to the late 17th century, with connections to many of Connecticut's first settlers. The Old North Burying Ground, established for residents living west of Middletown, received its first burial in 1738. Middlefield itself became an incorporated town in 1866 through an act of the Connecticut Legislature, having previously been part of the City of Middletown.
