Middlefield is a town in Middlesex County, Connecticut, nestled in the Lower Connecticut River Valley Planning Region. The town's name reflects its geographic position, sitting halfway between Middletown and Durham, and between Middletown and Meriden. With a population of 4,217 at the 2020 census, Middlefield is home to the village of Rockfall in its northeastern section and encompasses 13.3 square miles of land and water.
The town boasts a rich history reaching back to the late 17th century. The Old North Burying Ground, established for those living west of Middletown, received its first burial in 1738. Middlefield officially became a town in 1866 through an act of the Connecticut Legislature, having previously been part of the City of Middletown. The western side of town is flanked by the Metacomet Ridge, a mountainous trap rock ridgeline featuring notable peaks such as Higby Mountain and Besek Mountain, where the 50-mile Mattabesett Trail traverses the ridge.
