Stratford, Oklahoma has a distinctive history shaped by the railroad and the land. Originally established as the town of McGee in 1891, it was part of Pickens County in the Chickasaw Nation during Indian Territory days before Oklahoma statehood in 1907. The town's transformation came in 1906 when the Oklahoma Central Railroad built its line two miles south of McGee. Rather than being left behind, the entire town literally moved, with buildings loaded onto wagons and transported to the new railroad location. First called Walling, the town was renamed Stratford by October of that year.
Today, Stratford is known as the Peach Capital of the World, with more than four hundred acres of peach orchards surrounding the community. This agricultural heritage is celebrated annually through the Peach Festival, which began in 1976, along with an annual rodeo that dates back to 1936 and a car show. Both events are held the third Saturday in July.
