Pauls Valley, the county seat of Garvin County, Oklahoma, has roots reaching back to the early days of European-American settlement in Indian Territory. The city was founded by and named for Smith Paul, a North Carolina native born in 1809 who discovered the area's rich bottom land while traveling with a wagon train to California. Impressed by the fertile soil and towering blue stem grass, Paul eventually settled there after the Tri-Party Treaty of 1837 ceded the land to the Chickasaw Nation. He married Ela-Teecha, a Chickasaw woman, and in 1847 established a plantation where Rush Creek joined the Washita River.
The arrival of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway in 1887 transformed Smith Paul's Valley into a growing community. The railroad shortened the name to Paul's Valley and connected Kansas to the Gulf Coast, bringing prosperity and development. The town site was formally laid out in 1892, and by 1895 a U.S. courthouse stood downtown. A distinctive feature emerged when streets were bricked in 1909, eventually giving Pauls Valley more brick streets than any other town in the United States, with over seventeen thousand square yards of brick pavement.
Today, Pauls Valley reflects its agricultural and oil-based economy. The city, located fifty-seven miles south of Oklahoma City at the junction of Interstate 35 and State Highway 19, continues to honor its heritage through institutions like the historical society museum housed in the restored 1905 Santa Fe Railway depot. With a 2020 census population of 5,992, Pauls Valley remains an important regional center in south-central Oklahoma.
