Sterling is a city in Rice County, Kansas, with a population of 2,248 according to the 2020 census. Founded in 1872, Sterling was originally named Peace after a Quaker named Mr. Ninde, but the name was changed to Sterling in 1876 by two brothers in honor of their father, Sterling Rosan. The city has deep roots in Kansas history, as the region was inhabited by Native Americans for millennia before becoming part of the United States through the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.
