Geneseo is a small city in Rice County, Kansas, with a population of 236 as of the 2020 census. Founded in 1886, the city was named after Geneseo, Illinois and emerged as a transportation hub when two competing railroads—the Santa Fe Railway and the Missouri Pacific—intersected at this location. The Santa Fe Railway built northwesterly from Little River toward Holyrood in November 1886, while the Missouri Pacific was constructing westward from Kansas City to Pueblo, Colorado. Additional rail lines connected Geneseo to Hutchinson and Wichita, as well as north to the Union Pacific at Kanopolis, making the town an important junction for rail activity.
