Stanton is an unincorporated community in Stanton Township near the northwest corner of Goodhue County, Minnesota, positioned at the junction of State Highway 19 and State Highway 56. The community sits seven miles east of Northfield, six miles north-northeast of Dennison, and seven miles west-southwest of Cannon Falls. Prairie Creek and the Little Cannon River flow through the area, while the Cannon River and Lake Byllesby lie nearby.
The community's most notable feature is Stanton Airfield, which serves the sport aviation community with two grass-surfaced runways that are plowed during winter months. The airport has been in continuous operation since April 1942, when it was used to train pilots during World War II and housed a Link Trainer, one of the first flight simulators. Originally known as Carleton Airport due to its association with Carleton College, the airfield was designated a historic site in November 2004. Today it is home to the Minnesota Soaring Club, the largest soaring club in the upper Midwest, with over twenty-five gliders based there. Soaring activities take place primarily on weekends from mid-April through November. The airport's significance extends to its hosting of President Bill Clinton, who arrived by helicopter there in 2000 for a commencement address at Carleton College.
