Cannon Falls is a city in Goodhue County, Minnesota, located southeast of the Twin Cities along U.S. Route 52. With a population of 4,220 at the 2020 census, the city takes its name from the falls along the Cannon River and serves as the western trailhead for the Cannon Valley Trail. The area is home to Pachyderm Studios, a recording facility where many famous musicians have worked, including the band Nirvana, which recorded its 1993 album In Utero there.
The city's roots trace back to the 1850s, when Charles Parks settled the land in July 1854. Richard and William Freeborn laid out the village proper, which was platted in 1855 and incorporated in 1857. The abundant water power from the Big and Little Cannon Rivers attracted manufacturers and capital investment, leading to the construction of the first flouring mill in 1857 by R. C. Knox & Co., followed by wool mills, grist mills, and other industrial operations.
Cannon Falls faced significant challenges in the 1880s with two devastating fires. A May 1884 fire destroyed downtown buildings, and another fire in May 1887 destroyed 27 businesses and numerous buildings and houses. In response, the city enacted new building codes, installed a water system, organized a fire company, and built a Fireman's Hall in 1888. The city was reincorporated as a city in 1905. Cannon Falls also holds historical significance as the site of visits by two sitting U.S. presidents: Calvin Coolidge in 1928 and Barack Obama in 2011.
