Frontenac is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Florence Township, Goodhue County, Minnesota, situated on the Mississippi River. With a population of 249 as of the 2020 census, this small riverside town has a rich history spanning nearly two centuries. James Wells established a trading post at the location before 1850, conducting business primarily with Native Americans until the railroad arrived in the early 1870s. Brothers Israel and Lewis Garrard purchased extensive tracts of land during an 1854 hunting trip and helped establish the community permanently. Originally named Westervelt in 1855 to honor postmaster Evert V. Westervelt, the settlement was renamed Frontenac in 1860 by the Garrard brothers in honor of Louis de Buade de Frontenac, the French colonial governor of Canada. The area's picturesque scenery attracted wealthy residents seeking summer retreats, and several hotels, including the Lakeside Hotel established in 1867, earned the town a reputation as a resort destination during the late nineteenth century. When the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad line arrived during the 1870s, the founders' refusal to sell land resulted in the railway being built at a distance from town, preserving the scenic bluffs. This created two distinct areas: the original Old Frontenac and a newer Frontenac Station that developed around the railway station. Today, the community remains a destination for outdoor recreation, including Frontenac State Park, established in 1957, which encompasses Mississippi River floodplain, bluffs that serve as a migratory bird flyway, prairies, and hardwood forests.
