Stanley is a small town nestled in the Sawtooth Valley in Custer County, Idaho. With a population of 116 at the 2020 census, it has grown modestly from 63 residents a decade earlier. The town's location in the valley was first encountered by fur trappers from the Hudson's Bay Company in the 1820s, though they found little beaver in the area. Captain John Stanley, a Confederate Civil War veteran, led prospectors through the region in 1863 or 1864 searching for gold, but they found little and eventually moved on. The site did not formally become a town until 1919, when its streets and lots were officially surveyed and recorded.
Throughout its history, Stanley has served as a gathering place for the sparsely populated region. In 2000, the geographic center of Idaho's population was located in Stanley. The town gained national attention in 2005 when 22-year-old Hannah Stauts was elected mayor, becoming the state's youngest elected mayor. More recently, Stanley has attracted visitors for its natural attractions and dark skies. The 2017 solar eclipse brought large numbers of visitors to the area, and the town has pursued recognition from the International Dark-Sky Association, now residing within the Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve where the Milky Way is clearly visible. Stanley is surrounded by the Sawtooth National Recreation Area and sits at the crossroads of two scenic byways, making it an accessible destination in central Idaho's mountain landscape.
