Sheldon is a town in Franklin County in central Vermont, situated along the Missisquoi River, a west-flowing tributary of Lake Champlain. Named for Revolutionary War colonel Elisha Sheldon, the town was originally called Hungerford after Samuel Hungerford, who held the charter. The population was 2,136 at the 2020 census. Sheldon contains the unincorporated community of Sheldon Springs, located in the western part of town along Vermont Route 105. The town covers a total area of 39.5 square miles, with convenient road connections to nearby communities. Vermont Route 105 follows the Missisquoi River through town, leading east to Enosburg Falls and southwest to St. Albans, the county seat. Additional routes connect Sheldon to Franklin, Highgate Center, and Swanton. The town is served by the Franklin Northeast Supervisory Union for education. Sheldon has produced several notable figures throughout its history, including Lorenzo A. Babcock, who became the first Attorney General of Minnesota Territory, and Heber C. Kimball, a nineteenth-century Mormon apostle. Other notable residents include Elihu Goodsell, a Wisconsin legislator and businessman, and Bob Laraba, a professional and collegiate football player.
