Highgate Center is the primary village and census-designated place in the town of Highgate, located in northwestern Franklin County, Vermont. According to the 2020 census, the village had a population of 361 residents, while the entire town of Highgate counted 3,472 people. The village sits in the south-central portion of the town, positioned on the north side of the Missisquoi River, a west-flowing tributary of Lake Champlain that creates Highgate Falls as it passes through the area. Heading southeast on Route 78 takes travelers about six miles to Vermont Route 105 at Sheldon Junction, while the southwest route covers four miles to Swanton. Vermont Route 207 also passes through Highgate Center, offering additional connectivity with St. Albans just nine miles to the south and the Canadian border at Morses Line six miles to the northeast.
