Sawyer is a small town in Choctaw County, Oklahoma, situated in the eastern part of the county along U.S. Route 70. The town center lies on the east side of the Kiamichi River at Hugo Dam, with town limits extending north along Hugo Lake. Sawyer is conveniently located eight miles east of Hugo, the Choctaw County seat, and six miles west of Fort Towson.
Historically, Sawyer was part of Kiamitia County, which formed one of the constituent counties of the Apukshunnubbee District of the Choctaw Nation. The community experienced a significant natural disaster on November 4, 2022, when a violent EF4 tornado passed just east of town.
As of the 2020 census, Sawyer had a population of 340 residents living within its 8.8 square miles. The town is entirely rural, with a median age of 50.3 years.
