Boswell is a town in Choctaw County, Oklahoma, with a population of 579 as of the 2020 census. The area holds deep significance in Native American history as one of the Choctaw Nation's first and most important settlements. In the 1840s, a Presbyterian missionary station was established at Mayhew, located three miles north of present-day Boswell in what was then Indian Territory. Mayhew quickly grew in importance, becoming not only a center of civilization but also the administrative and judicial capital of the Pushmataha District, one of three major administrative regions of the Choctaw Nation. A United States Post Office opened at Mayhew on February 5, 1845, serving the community for nearly six decades. Following territorial reorganization in 1886, when portions of Blue County were joined with adjacent counties to form Jackson County, the post office relocated two miles south to Boswell in 1902. The town itself emerged as a new townsite along the newly constructed railroad. Boswell takes its name from S.C. Boswell, a local merchant who played a role in the community's development. Today, the town spans 0.7 square miles and is home to Boswell State Park, an Oklahoma State Park featuring a lake stocked with channel catfish, offering recreational opportunities to residents and visitors alike.
