Grant is an unincorporated community in Choctaw County, Oklahoma, located along U.S. Route 271 south of Hugo. The community was founded as a station stop on the St. Louis and San Francisco Railroad, which opened through the Indian Territory in June 1887. A post office was established at Grant on January 31, 1889, and the community was named in honor of President Ulysses S. Grant. At the time of its founding, Grant was situated in Kiamitia County, part of the Apukshunnubbee District of the Choctaw Nation.
Over the decades, Grant has remained a small rural community. According to the 2020 census, the population stood at 190 residents. The community is entirely rural, with no urban areas within its bounds. The median age of residents was 37.0 years, with roughly equal proportions of residents under eighteen and over sixty-five years old. There were eighty-four households in the community and 103 housing units, with most households consisting of either married couples or individuals living alone.
Grant has been home to notable individuals, including Alan B. Banister, a U.S. Navy Rear Admiral and double Navy Cross recipient, and Mark Dinning, a pop music singer. Today, Grant continues as a quiet rural community rooted in its railroad heritage and connected to the broader history of the Choctaw Nation and Oklahoma Territory.
