Reading is a small city located in Hillsdale County, Michigan, along State Highway M-49. With a population of 1,095 at the 2020 census, Reading has maintained a modest size throughout its history. The city is surrounded by Reading Township, though both maintain separate administrations.
The area was first settled in 1835 by local township residents and was originally called Basswood Corners, named for the basswood trees that grew at the main intersection. When a post office was established on December 14, 1840, the community took the name Reading, honoring both the township and Reading, Pennsylvania, from which the township itself had derived its name. The community was formally platted in 1852 around a newly constructed sawmill, marking the beginning of organized development. A railway station arrived in 1869, facilitating commerce and travel. Reading incorporated as a village in 1873 and later achieved city status in 1934.
Today, the city encompasses 1.01 square miles of land area. M-49 serves as Main Street, running north and south through the city center. Reading Community Schools operates the local school district, serving the city and portions of several adjacent townships.
