Palmer is an unincorporated community in central Marquette County, Michigan, situated about ten miles south of Negaunee and fifteen miles southwest of Marquette, the county seat. As a census-designated place, Palmer has no legal status as an incorporated municipality but serves statistical purposes for the region. The community is accessed by M-35, a highway connecting north to US Highway 41 and M-28 near Negaunee and Marquette, and extending south toward Gwinn. According to the 2020 census, Palmer had a population of 378 residents.
The community is located within Richmond Township in an area covering 0.59 square miles. Warner Creek, a tributary flowing south into the East Branch of the Escanaba River, drains the area. Palmer experiences a humid continental climate characterized by warm summers and cold winters typical of the region.
The local economy has experienced significant changes in recent years. The Empire Mine, operated by Cleveland-Cliffs, once flanked the community but ceased operations in August 2016. Other businesses have also closed, including Trewhella's IGA grocery store, which operated since 1961, and Fran's gas station, which closed in late 2018. The radio station WRUP, broadcasting at 98.3 FM, moved its community of license to Palmer in 2009 to better serve listeners throughout the Marquette area.
