Nutley is a township in Essex County, New Jersey, with a population of 30,143 according to the 2020 census, representing steady growth over two decades. Originally incorporated as Franklin Township on February 18, 1874, from portions of Belleville Township, the community was reincorporated as a town on March 5, 1902. In 1981, Nutley voted to become a township, a change adopted by multiple Essex County municipalities to take advantage of federal revenue sharing policies that provided townships greater per capita aid allocations. The township's name derives from an estate established by the Satterthwaite family in 1844 along the Passaic River and from an artist's colony that developed in the area.
Nutley's early history includes Dutch settlement dating to 1693, with Bastian Van Giesen recorded as the first European settler. The Vreeland Homestead, constructed in 1751 by Van Giesen's son, still stands on Chestnut Street. Brownstone quarrying emerged as the town's first major industry by the early 18th century, providing employment for Italian and Irish immigrants in the Avondale section. Mills along the Third River became the second major industry, with owners John and Thomas Speer, Joseph Kingsland, and Henry Duncan leaving their mark on the community through both their businesses and the streets named after them. Duncan established Franklinville, which became Nutley's center. During the late 1880s, painter Frank Fowler founded an artists' colony that attracted other notable artists including Frederick Dana Marsh and Reginald Marsh.
