Millburn is a suburban township in southwestern Essex County, New Jersey, situated approximately fifteen miles west of Midtown Manhattan and part of the New York metropolitan area. According to the 2020 census, the township's population reached 21,710, its highest decennial count ever. The unincorporated community of Short Hills, located within Millburn, is home to most of the township's residents.
The township was established on March 20, 1857, from portions of Springfield Township. Its name derives from the burn, a Scottish word for stream, that once powered mills in the area. Before its formal establishment, the township had been known variously as Milltown, Millville, Rum Brook, and Vauxhall. The area played a significant role during the Revolutionary War, with George Washington's forces positioned at nearby Morristown and Washington Rock located within what is now the South Mountain Reservation.
Following the Revolution, the Rahway River was dammed in five locations to create mill ponds. Samuel Campbell established the first paper mill in 1790, and paper manufacturing became the dominant industry, with the Diamond Mill eventually becoming the site of the Paper Mill Playhouse. The completion of the Morris and Essex Railroad in 1835 connected Millburn to major eastern cities and coal regions. Two unincorporated suburbs developed within the township: Wyoming and Short Hills, which Stewart Hartshorn founded on 1,550 acres of purchased land.
Today, Millburn is one of New Jersey's highest-income communities and is home to notable institutions including the Paper Mill Playhouse, an established regional theater designated as the State Theatre of New Jersey, and the Mall at Short Hills, an upscale shopping destination.
