Montclair is a township in Essex County, New Jersey, situated on the cliffs of the Watchung Mountains and serving as a commercial and cultural hub of North Jersey. Located within the New York metropolitan area, Montclair functions as a diverse bedroom community for New York City, positioned approximately twelve miles from the Manhattan skyline. The township is home to Montclair State University, the state's second-largest university. According to the 2020 census, Montclair's population was 40,921, representing an increase of 8.6 percent from the previous decade. The township derives its name from the French term mont clair, meaning "clear mountain" or "bright mountain."
Montclair was initially formed as a township on April 15, 1868, from portions of Bloomfield Township to accommodate the construction of a second railroad. After a referendum in February 1894, it was reincorporated as a town three days later. In 1980, following protests by municipal officials regarding inequities in federal revenue-sharing policies, Montclair voters approved a referendum to change its government form back to a township, becoming the third Essex County municipality to reclassify in order to receive greater per capita federal aid. The township has long been recognized for its ethnic diversity, with an African-American community that historically comprised around thirty percent of residents. The township was home to the state's first marijuana dispensary, which opened in December 2012, before recreational cannabis legalization in 2022.
