New Iberia is the largest city and parish seat of Iberia Parish, located in Louisiana's Acadiana region approximately 21 miles southeast of Lafayette. Founded in the spring of 1779, the city began when around 500 Spanish colonists led by Lieutenant Colonel Don Francisco Bouligny settled along Bayou Teche near Spanish Lake. The settlers named their new home "Nueva Iberia" in honor of the Iberian Peninsula, a name that French and English speakers adapted to their own languages over time. The town's official name was recognized by the U.S. government in 1814 when a post office opened, though the charter was not formally amended to "New Iberia" until 1847. When Iberia Parish was established in 1868, New Iberia became its seat of government, eventually completing a permanent courthouse in 1884 that served until 1940.
Today, New Iberia is home to 28,555 residents according to the 2020 census and serves as an important transportation hub for the region. The city is served by Amtrak's Sunset Limited route between Los Angeles and New Orleans, and major highways including U.S. 90, which will become part of Interstate 49. The surrounding area offers distinctive natural and cultural attractions, including Lake Peigneur, Spanish Lake, Avery Island with its famous Tabasco sauce factory, and the region's rock salt deposits.
