New Germany is a small city located in Carver County, Minnesota, with a population of 464 as of the 2020 census. The community's name reflects its origins, as a large proportion of the early settlers were natives of Germany. The city was established in the 1880s around the Great Northern Railroad depot. Its first post office, originally named Purity, was moved to the area from a different site and retained that name until 1902, when it was finally changed to match the railroad and community name. New Germany incorporated as a village in 1901 in Camden Township and later separated as a city under Minnesota law in 1974. During World War I in 1917, the village temporarily changed its name to Motordale before restoring the name New Germany in 1922. Today, New Germany covers one square mile and is served by County Roads 30 and 33, with Minnesota State Highway 7 in proximity to the city. The community borders the Lake Minnetonka LRT Regional Trail. Public school students in the area are served by Waconia Public Schools, which operates Waconia High School. The city is notable as the hometown of Abigail and Brittany Hensel, dicephalic conjoined twins born in 1990.
