Middletown, located in Frederick County, Maryland, sits in the scenic Middletown Valley between the Catoctin Mountains to the east and South Mountain to the west. The town's name reflects its geography, situated midway between these two mountain ranges. As of the 2020 census, Middletown had grown to a population of 4,943 residents.
The town's history stretches back to the early eighteenth century when German and English settlers arrived in the valley during the 1730s. Michael Jesserong, one of these early settlers, purchased fifty acres and named his property Middletown, officially founding the town in 1767 when he sold the first lots. The area had caught the attention of a young Lieutenant George Washington during his surveying work, who called Middletown Valley one of the most beautiful places he had ever seen. Years later, as a colonel in 1755, Washington passed through the valley with General Braddock on the old Indian Trail heading toward Fort Cumberland.
Development accelerated in the nineteenth century with the construction of the National Pike through town in 1806, followed by telegraph lines from Frederick to Hagerstown in 1854 and the Frederick Middletown Railway in 1896. During the Civil War, both armies passed through Middletown on their way to the battles of South Mountain and Antietam, and the town's churches and homes opened to care for the wounded. Today, Middletown preserves numerous historic structures reflecting its varied architectural heritage, from Federal and Greek Revival styles to Victorian and Colonial Revival designs, many registered in the Middletown Historic District.
