Jefferson is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Frederick County, Maryland, with a population of 2,697 as of the 2020 census. The town was established in 1774 on a 96-acre tract owned by Mrs. Eleanor Medley, initially called "New Town" and containing forty rectangular lots. Additional lots were platted in 1795 by Elias Delashmutt in a section called "New Freedom." The Maryland Legislature incorporated both sections as Jefferson in 1831, though the citizens voted to disincorporate just a year later in 1832, and it has remained unincorporated ever since.
Jefferson's growth during the nineteenth century was driven largely by its strategic location on the main road between Frederick and Harpers Ferry, now Maryland Route 180. This thoroughfare saw constant wagon traffic and livestock drives, spurring commercial development to serve surrounding farms and travelers. The town functioned as a center of agricultural commerce and was home to a substantial enslaved population throughout the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Local history suggests the area was once called "Trap Town" due to the numerous taverns operating at both ends of town, where travelers could become "trapped" during their journeys.
Located at the western base of Catoctin Mountain in southwestern Frederick County, Jefferson sits approximately nine miles southwest of Frederick and thirteen miles northeast of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. The town received rail service in 1907 when the Hagerstown and Frederick Railway connected it to those cities.
