Merrill is a small village located in Jonesfield Township within Saginaw County, Michigan. With a population of 663 at the 2020 census, it occupies just under three-quarters of a square mile and is crossed by state highway M-46. The village's roots trace back to 1872, when the Saginaw Valley and St. Louis Railroad extended into the area, spurring development. A local resident named Greene established a sawmill that became the nucleus of a growing settlement. A post office named Greene opened in 1875, and as merchants arrived and businesses sprouted up around a nearby crossroad, the community gradually became known as Merrill by 1881. The name honors N. W. Merrill, a railroad worker whose assistance to locals during forest fires that year earned him the community's gratitude and respect. The post office was officially renamed Merrill on November 2, 1881, and the village incorporated in 1889. From its origins as a sawmill settlement tied to railroad expansion, Merrill evolved into a modest but stable community that has persisted for over a century and a half.
