Chesaning is a village located in Saginaw County, Michigan, with a population of 2,430 according to the 2020 census. The village sits within Chesaning Township and covers a total area of 3.14 square miles.
The history of Chesaning reaches back to 1819 with the Saginaw Treaty between the Saginaw Tribe, Chippewa Indians, and the United States government. This treaty established the Big Rock Reserve along the Shiawassee River, comprising 10,000 acres. The name Chesaning itself comes from a Chippewa word meaning "big rock place." When a second treaty in 1837 led to the reserve being surveyed and offered for sale in 1841, brothers Wellington and George W. Chapman, along with Rufus Mason, purchased the first land at five dollars per acre. They returned with their families by late summer of 1842 to find that other settlers had already established a dam and sawmill in the area. The community was originally named Northampton in honor of the settlers' Massachusetts hometown, but the legislature changed it to Chesaning in 1853. The first township elections occurred in 1847, marking the official birthday of the community.
Early business development centered on the east side of the river, where abundant lumber was used for construction. However, fires caused by coal heating systems frequently destroyed blocks of stores, prompting businesses to relocate west of the river. A railroad built through Chesaning in 1867, made possible by Wellington Chapman's donation of eighteen thousand dollars to the railroad company, proved vital to the village's economy.
