Lowman is a small rural census-designated place in Boise County, Idaho, situated along the north bank of the South Fork of the Payette River at an elevation of 3,960 feet. The town was named after Nathaniel Winfield Lowman, a homesteader from Polk County, Iowa, who settled there in 1907 and established what would become this remote mountain community.

The area lies along the famous Highway to Heaven trail, a mountain passage stretching over 150 miles from Boise that stands as the only such route in the West beginning from a major city. The trail winds through historic landscapes, climbing to various summits before reaching Stanley.
Despite its small size, Lowman maintains a one-room school, one of only a couple hundred still operating in the United States. The community sits in a geothermally active region where natural hot springs surface throughout the area. In 1989, a devastating wildfire swept through the surrounding landscape, destroying over 45,000 acres and 26 structures, though fortunately causing no injuries or fatalities.
