Lowell is a city in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, with a population of approximately 115,554 as of 2020, making it the fifth most populous city in the state and the third largest in the Boston metropolitan area. Incorporated in 1826, Lowell was founded as a planned manufacturing center for textiles along the Merrimack River, about 25 miles northwest of Boston. The city was named after Francis Cabot Lowell, a visionary leader of the Boston Associates who had died five years before the city's founding.
Built on the site of the former farming community of East Chelmsford, Lowell quickly became the cradle of the American Industrial Revolution. By the 1850s, it housed the largest industrial complex in the United States, with more cotton spindles in 1860 than in all eleven states that would form the Confederacy combined. The mills drew workers from diverse backgrounds, including Irish immigrants fleeing the Great Famine, young women from New England farms known as Mill Girls, Germans, and French Canadians.
The city's fortunes changed in the twentieth century. Manufacturing declined in the 1920s as companies relocated south, leaving Lowell economically depressed through the Great Depression and beyond. Recovery came in the 1970s when Lowell became headquarters for Wang Laboratories, part of the Massachusetts Miracle. Simultaneously, the city received thousands of refugees fleeing the Cambodian genocide, transforming its demographics and creating America's second-largest Cambodian-American population.
